THE SHORT ANSWER
Service-area business SEO starts with a clear explanation of where you work and how customers book. Publish accurate services, coverage, hours and contact details. If customers do not visit your base, Google says to remove its address from your Business Profile. Do not expose a home address or invent a storefront to chase an AI recommendation.
Start service-area business SEO with the address decision
A service-area business travels to customers: think of a mobile cleaner or repair team. In an October 7, 2026 discussion about home addresses, an owner asks whether publishing a residential address could help ChatGPT visibility. That is a real publication decision, but the reported traffic spike does not prove that an address caused it.
Google’s service-area guidance says to remove the address from the profile when customers are not served there. A hybrid business that also receives customers at its address can show both address and service area. Decide from your actual operation, not the format a directory prefers.
A hidden profile address does not remove copies from your website or other listings. Review those separately. Consistency should mean truthful identity and coverage, not copying a private address into every public field. Check each platform’s rules before submitting a listing.
Make the service area useful to a buyer
Give your main service page a practical coverage section. Name the towns or postal areas you actually serve. Explain how someone near the boundary can confirm availability. Distinguish booking hours from appointment hours, and state any real call-out conditions before the customer submits an inquiry.
Start with one complete page. Add a separate location page when a place needs different information, such as availability, travel charges or local access requirements. Changing only the town name adds little help. Use our guide to clear, supported service content to review the answer and its evidence.
Correct listings with a small fact register
Keep one approved record of the business name, public phone, website, services, coverage and hours. Compare it with your website and the listings customers encounter. Prioritize a wrong phone number, false storefront or outdated service boundary before minor formatting differences.
Google’s business representation rules reject virtual mailing locations where the business does not operate. They also address separate service locations and staffing. Serving several towns does not itself create several eligible branches. Review eligibility before creating another profile.
- Record the listing URL, incorrect field and approved replacement.
- Assign an owner and save the correction request date.
- Reopen the public listing to confirm the change; submission is not completion.
- Recheck after a move, new phone number or service change.
Keep schema within the public facts
Google’s LocalBusiness rich-result documentation lists address as a required property for that feature. A service-area description is not a substitute for its physical-address requirement. If you withhold an address, do not claim that the markup meets that feature’s requirements.
JSON-LD is delivered with the page and can be read even when a template does not display it. Do not put a private address there as a hidden workaround. Google’s structured-data policies on visible content require accurate, relevant markup. Ask your developer to describe only the business facts you intentionally publish.
This is separate from eligibility for an AI search link. Google’s guidance for AI features requires supporting pages to be indexed and eligible for snippets, without special AI schema. Missing one rich-result property does not establish that a page cannot be cited.
Check local answers against the service promise
An October 20, 2026 discussion of local AI recommendations reports different businesses appearing in assistant answers and Maps. Treat that as a reason to inspect each experience, not evidence of a universal ranking formula. Public comments and vendor suggestions do not establish how every assistant selects a business.
Sample one town and one service first. Record the exact question, location context, language, date, assistant and cited pages. Check whether the answer wrongly invites a visit to your home, promises unavailable hours or covers a town you do not serve. Correct the underlying public source where you can, then repeat the observation.
Our workflow for recording and resolving AI answer errors helps assign those corrections. For technical access and page checks, see Citevia’s SEO implementation service. A corrected listing and an accurate service page are verifiable deliverables. A future recommendation remains outside your control.
Service-area business SEO: practical questions
Should I publish my home address just to match directories?
No. First decide which details should be public and follow each platform’s service-area rules. On Google Business Profile, remove the address if you do not serve customers there. Correct misleading listings rather than spreading a private address to create superficial consistency.
Can I create a Business Profile for every town I serve?
Serving a town alone does not justify another profile. Google’s guidelines allow separate service locations under conditions including separate staff and service areas. Review the real locations against those rules. A rented mailing address is not an eligible operating branch.
Is an address inside JSON-LD private?
No. Anyone who can fetch the page can inspect the structured data it includes. Review source code as well as visible contact details. Do not use JSON-LD to hide a home address from readers while supplying it to search systems.
Will omitting an address make my site ineligible for all AI search?
That conclusion is not supported. Google’s LocalBusiness rich-result address requirement concerns that feature. Its AI search guidance does not require special schema. Check the page’s actual indexing and snippet eligibility; other providers have their own rules. None of these checks guarantees inclusion.
What should I fix if an assistant sends customers to my home?
Save the answer and open its cited sources. Correct any listing or page you control that implies walk-in service, and request corrections from other publishers. State the real booking process on your service page. Recheck later and record unresolved answers; changing a source does not guarantee an immediate update everywhere.
